Does an extension give me more time to pay what I owe the IRS?
Filing an extension gives you 6 months extra to file your return. Unfortunately this does not supply you with extra time to pay the amount owed. Once the IRS receives your payment, they will reply by sending you a letter stating the penalties and interest. You can prevent higher charges by filing your return and paying the amount due as soon as you possibly can. Estimated tax payments during the year can prevent extra charges like penalties. |
